Will my mobility scooter accidentally roll down a ramp or a hill?
Mobility scooters have intelligent braking systems that stop them from rolling backwards or forwards unless activated by the hand control lever. The brake will engage even when the scooter is switched off. Only scooters with freewheel controls have the ability to be pushed or rolled manually.
How far can I travel on my mobility scooter once it's charged?
This depends on the scooter. The larger the scooter, generally the further the scooter will allow you to travel on a single battery charge. Some of the bigger scooters will allow you to travel up to 50km. If you plan to explore further than your neighbourhood shopping centre, purchasing or hiring a scooter with long range capabilities is a good idea particularly if you are visiting Gold Coast Theme Parks or large shopping malls.
How long does a mobility scooter battery need to fully charge?
Full charges can take between 7–10 hours. We do not recommend fully discharging the batteries (2) between charges. It is advisable to keep the battery charger plugged in and charging your batteries when the scooter is not in use.
Do mobility scooters have a maximum weight capacity?
This depends on the scooter. Generally the weight capacity ranges from 136kg to up to 280kg.
Is it okay to ride my mobility scooter in the rain?
Providing it’s not a torrential downpour that will potentially soak the electronic control panel, then it is okay to ride your mobility scooter in the rain. Although we advise, not trying to ride through flooded areas. All weather covers are available.
Can I carry passengers on my mobility scooter?
No, unless its a double seat, it is intended for the driver only.
How fast will my scooter go?
The maximum speed on mobility scooters can differ depending on the brand and the size of the scooter However, in NSW mobility scooters are not to travel faster than 10kmph and in Queensland, the speed limit is 12kmph.
Do I need a drivers licence to operate a scooter?
Is there an age restriction for mobility scooters?
Yes, children younger than 12 years of age must not operate mobility scooter at all, whereas those aged between 12–15 years must be supervised by an adult.
Am I allowed to ride my scooter on the road?
No. You must use the footpath unless it’s impractical, such as an obstruction on the path or nature strip—in these instances you are permitted to travel up to 50 metres on the road.
Do motorised wheelchairs and mobility scooters need to be registered?
If you are living in NSW, scooters and motorised wheelchairs are not required to be registered, but you must abide by the road rules. In Queensland, you must register mobility scooters and motorised wheelchairs, unless you are visiting. If you move to Queensland, you have up to 14 days to make sure your scooter or wheelchair is registered.

Are there any safety precautions I should take when travelling in mobility scooter or power chair?
Pre-plan your route that has access to a footpath for your journey including noting where driveways or kerb ramps can be used for safely crossing the road.
Stay off highways, roundabouts and major roads.
If a footpath is not available, and you must travel on the road, be sure to keep well to the side and face oncoming traffic. Don’t assume just because you can see a driver that they can see you.
A safety flag will make you more visible.
If you can’t avoid travelling at night, be sure to use lights and reflectors.
What is a lift chair?
Moving from a sitting to a standing position can often be quite difficult for many people with arthritis or wear and tear on joints. Lift chairs gently help a person out of a seat by raising them to a standing position. It looks like an everyday recliner and is available in a range of different fabrics and colours.
Is there a weight limit with lift chairs?
Yes. If you are overweight or purchasing the chair for someone who is more generously proportioned, be sure to check the maximum weight capacity.
Will insurance cover the purchase or hire of a lift chair?
It depends on your cover. Please check with your insurance company.
